Light Camera Austin Interview
“Ever wondered how your favorite fish to eat ends up on your dinner plate? Kelly Lipscomb has, and the Austin-based director’s documentary Bite to Bite reveals what it takes for members of the fishing industry to make that happen. Bite to Bite follows the journey a 450-pound bluefin tuna undertakes from its capture in the waters of Nova Scotia to the now-closed Tsukiji Fish Market in Japan. Lipscomb joins fishermen Dennis Cameron and Lloyd MacInnes as they travel outside of their native Canada for the first time to learn and watch how the bluefin tuna they caught is prepared, packed, and shipped to Japan; put up for auction at the Tsukiji Fish Market; its meat carved, cut, and sold wholesale to restaurants and supermarkets; and served to sushi lovers. Bite to Bite will screen at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Long Center and at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 during the Austin Film Festival. Austin-based filmmaker Kelly Lipscomb previously directed Texas Cheer, Showband, and Chasing Danger. He also produced Homestate and served as an associate producer of Yakona.”

The film follows a single giant Bluefin tuna from the icy Atlantic waters of Nova Scotia to Tokyo’s legendary Tsukiji Market — tracing a story of tradition, survival, and the global seafood economy. We explore how this cinematic odyssey reveals the human cost of overfishing, the future of sustainability, and why the fate of one fish can reflect the state of our oceans.”
